Patient Transportation Fund

The Shrine Patient Transportation Fund is an arm of Shriners Hospitals for Children that was set up as a program to provide for the transportation of patients to and from their appointments. As they say, what good is a hospital if we can’t get them there?

When the parent of a patient reaches out to us requesting travel reimbursement, we reimburse them based on the current IRS standard mileage rate for travel for medical purposes. If the patient needs air travel or any other form of transportation (train, bus, etc.), we purchase the ticket on their behalf and closely work with them to ensure an itinerary that best suits the needs of all parties. If an overnight stay is required, oftentimes there is a local Ronald McDonald house in the nearby area in which the family can seek lodging for the evening. If there are no Ronald McDonald houses nearby, or if they are filled to capacity for the evening, we have a list of nearby hotels in each area in which we can seek accommodations for our families.

All of the contributions made to our Patient Transportation Fund are managed under the same 501(c)(3) number as our hospitals and the Shrine centers are allowed to manage these funds under the guidance of SHC. The Patient Transportation Fund is an entirely separate account from our Shrine Center funds and we must report on a regular basis to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any additional questions about what our Patient Transportation Fund does or if you are interested in making a tax-deductible donation.
